Job Posting: Independent Electoral Officer 2020

The Simon Fraser Public Interest Research Group (SFPIRG) will be putting out a call for nominations for folks interested in sitting on the SFPIRG Board of Directors in late-February 2020. To run this process, we are looking for an Independent Electoral Officer who is responsible for overseeing the nomination and electoral process (for the Board of Directors) from late-February to early-April. The position involves 1- 5 hours of work per week in February and March, with more work during the election period (if required) in March and April. An honorarium of $200 will be given for the nominations period, and in the case of elections, another $300 will be given.

  • Must be available for two information sessions:
    • Thurs. February 27th, 2020 – 12:30-2:30pm
    • Wed. March 7th, 2020 – 12:30-2:30pm

ELECTORAL OFFICER JOB DESCRIPTION

The Electoral Officer is responsible for overseeing SFPIRG’s nomination and electoral process for its Board of Directors from February to April 2020. The position involves 1- 5 hours a week of work in February and March, with more work during the election period (if required*) in March and April. The Electoral Officer shall be accountable to the Board, but shall have authority to conduct the election.

* Elections will only be held if there are more candidates than available positions. There are a maximum of nine seats available on the Board of Directors according to SFPIRG’s bylaws.

 

SPECIFIC DUTIES:

Nominations Period:

  • Putting out the call for nominations
  • Providing notice for deadlines
  • Reviewing nominations to ensure the eligibility of candidates
  • Organizing a nominees’ info session
  • Organizing a candidates’ meeting

Elections Period:

  • Instructing candidates on the election process
  • Arranging for the production of a collective candidate poster
  • Promoting the election on campus
  • Approving campaign material
  • Enforcing the regulations regarding appropriate campaigning/campaign material
  • Production of the ballots
  • Overseeing the voting during the election
  • Counting the votes
  • Release of the election results
  • Other election duties, as required

 

COMPENSATION:

The Electoral Officer shall receive an honorarium of $200 for work performed during the nominations period, and an additional $300 honorarium for electoral duties should elections be held.
