During these three events\, researchers will share a diverse expertise on how we move beyond institutional research ethics to enacting real forms of consent\, accountability\, and care in how we do research. \nIn this event we will be talking about how a large amount of knowledge gathering occurs through surveys and data analysis. There are many ethical considerations that go into data collection through these methods\, but how do we do this better? SUMMARY:More Than a Checkbox : Beyond Institutional Ethics in Art Practice
DESCRIPTION:The SFU Graduate Student Society (GSS) and the Simon Fraser Public Interest Research Group (SFPIRG) are pleased to co-host this series on research ethics for graduate students across BC. During these three events\, researchers will share a diverse expertise on how we move beyond institutional research ethics to enacting real forms of consent\, accountability\, and care in how we do research \nThis event will delve into the difference between institutional and community ethics can be quite a gap. There are consent and ethical protocols that go well beyond those required by the Office of Research Ethics and just don’t seem to fit into the application. This panel hosts researchers and artists engaged in ethical practices – who are thinking about how art can be done in thoughtful ways that work to build communities or advance political ideas for communities. We will close with questions and ways to talk about these ethical considerations in research applications. \nRegister here: https://forms.gle/NQXukHn6Cd6Sh6DW6  \nSpeakers: Lois Klassen + Roxanne Charles \nRoxanne Charles of Semiahmoo First Nation is a cultural historian employing means of visual representation\, oral history\, and ceremony. Roxanne holds two undergraduate degrees from Kwantlen Polytechnic University and a Master of Fine Arts from Simon Fraser University. Roxanne’s work directly responds to a troubling colonial present and documents a variety of issues that reflect her life experience such as spirituality\, identity\, urbanization\, food security\, resource extraction\, trauma\, and various forms of systemic violence. \nLois Klassen is an artist\, writer and researcher working and living on traditional and unceded Coast Salish territory. Klassen is a SSHRC Postdoctoral Fellow with criticalMediArtStudio (cMAS) in the School of Interactive Arts and Technology (SFU Surrey) and a parttime research ethics board coordinator at Emily Carr University of Art + Design. Klassen was a 2020 Fulbright Scholar with Center for Inter-American Border Studies and the Ruben Center for the Visual Arts\, University of Texas El Paso. Klassen’s research and writing takes up ethics and participatory art practices—a topic she covers for the Canadian Association of Research Ethics Boards Circle of Experts. Lois Klassen is the founder of Light Factory Publications\, an itinerant publishing house that hosts the artist project\, Reading the Migration Library\, and the imprint\, Present Cartographers.

SUMMARY:Fee Refund Week - Summer 2022 Semester
DESCRIPTION:SFPIRG is a student-funded non-profit organization\, autonomous from the University\, Simon Fraser Student Society\, and the Graduate Student Society. Each semester we receive $3.00 from full-time undergraduate students and $1.50 from part-time undergraduate students. A successful graduate student referendum in Spring 2020 increased grad student membership fees and tied them to local inflation rates. As of Fall 2021 we receive $5.61 from full-time graduate students and $2.81 from part-time graduate students. After paying their student fees\, all students are members of SFPIRG and can use the resources available through our centre. Non-students can also become associate members of SFPIRG and get involved with us. \nWhat do we do with fees we collect? We offer many great services such as equity support on research\, homework\, and for TAs and TMs to improve their classroom environments as well as trainings for the campus community throughout the year. We offer funding for student activities and projects such as through the Usamah Ansari Creative Justice Award. We also offer resources such as projectors\, art materials\, and rally supplies for student events and activities. Our equity library also offers many resources on marginalised research topics such as disability justice\, abolition\, and the steps and skills it takes to transform the world. \nWe realize that not everyone shares SFPIRG’s values\, so each semester we offer students the ability to revoke their membership. If you would like to opt-out\, please see the COVID-19 update below. Once you opt-out\, you are no longer a member of SFPIRG and will not be eligible to use the organization’s resources and services. \n*COVID-19 Update* Due to the COVID-19 pandemic\, fee refunds will be administered differently for the Summer 2022 semester. DESCRIPTION:Are you new to social movement organising and don’t know where to start? Are you shifting roles and energies in social movements? it can be overwhelming to know what it is you are supposed to be doing to fight against climate crisis and colonialism! But more and more the movements we are building are moving away from the idea of an activist as someone who shows up at rallies. our movements need so many different gifts and skills to build the world we need. \nJoin us for a lunch time conversation about the many roles that exist in making changed. Based on the tools created by Deepa Iyer (@DeepaVIyer) including the Social Change Map and workbook\, we will be investigating and discussing how we show up with more integrity to movements that matter to us. \nWe will be reviewing accommodation needs based on registration to determine the comfort levels of those wishing to attend. SUMMARY:Radical Reads: On Earth We Are Briefly Gorgeous
DESCRIPTION:Join the SFPIRG Rotunda Library in our first radical reads session where we will be discussing the magnificent book “On Earth We Are Briefly Beautiful” by Ocean Voung. We are excited to host this session that digs deep into personal stories of immigration\, belonging\, and identity in advance of our visit from Harsha Walia the following week\, who will be discussing the impacts of borders and status. \n\n\nDuring the course of this session our Rotunda Library work study students and staff will be leading participants through discussion questions. Do not feel like you have to read the entire book for this discussion to be impactful and relevant! Also\, if you cannot afford to buy a copy of the book\, please contact us at engagement@sfpirg.ca or visit us in the office and we can work on sourcing you a copy. \n\nTrigger warning: this book does include homophobic slurs\, mentions of bullying\, violence\, and trauma. \n\nThis will be an in person discussion on October 20th from 11am-12:30 in the SGPIRG Lounge SUB 1410. This is a masked space with many types of seating for any body that might be there. DESCRIPTION:On Wednesday October 26 from 11am-12:30pm in the SFPIRG Lounge Harsha will be reading from her acclaimed and award-winning book Border & Rule: Global Migration\, Capitalism\, and the Rise of Racist Nationalism. \nHarsha Walia is a South Asian activist and writer based in Vancouver\, unceded Coast Salish Territories. She has been involved in community-based grassroots migrant justice\, feminist\, anti-racist\, Indigenous solidarity\, anti-capitalist\, Palestinian liberation\, and anti-imperialist movements\, including No One is Illegal and Women’s Memorial March Committee. She is formally trained in law\, works with women in Vancouver’s Downtown Eastside\, and is the author of Undoing Border Imperialism (2013). \nWe are delighted to be joined by Harsha as well for a writing workshop following the reading. \nIn-person space for this event will be very limited so register early. We will be live streaming the event for those who cannot attend in person. SUMMARY:Rita Wong:  "Letters to Our Loved Ones: A Writing Workshop"
DESCRIPTION:SFPIRG Rotunda Library is excited to announce the next session of our visiting author series with Rita Wong. Rita Wong grew up in Calgary\, Alberta\, and is the author of three books of poetry\, sybil unrest\, written with Larissa Lai; forage\, and monkeypuzzle as well as co-edited collection downstream: re-imagining water. Wong has won the Asian Canadian Writers Workshop Emerging Writers Award and the Dorothy Livesay Poetry Prize. Her work investigates social issues and ecology. She lives in Vancouver and is an associate professor in critical and cultural studies at Emily Carr University of Art and Design.\n\nIt is human to feel grief when we see places we loved being sacrificed\, as we see happening on Burnaby Mountain. Ecological grief is a global condition\, which we experience in specific locations as we see trees clearcut and streams poisoned by industrial projects like the TransMountain pipeline expansion. Rita Wong will introduce the 1308 Trees project\, a collection of letters written to some of the thousands of trees that have been  killed for the pipeline expansion\, at the very time when we needed more trees\, not less. She will invite workshop participants to write their own letters and poems or to make offerings for their beloved more-than-human relatives: the trees\, the hummingbirds\, the creeks\, the salmon\, the orca\, the nooksack dace\, and more\, all of whom are losing their lives and/or homes to the pipeline expansion. Acknowledging the grief\, voicing it\, is a step in processing it\, and finding ways to transform it into collective action\, to honour the lives that have been lost and continue to be threatened\, including our own.\n\nWe will announce a full list of accessibility considerations once we are sure which location we will be using for this event.\n\n\nSFPIRG will provide all physical writing supplies. we do encourage folks to handwrite for this workshop\, but if typing is more accessible please bring your own tablet or laptop.\nWe will provide a variety of different seating options for the many types\, accessibility needs\, and shapes of bodies present.\nWe re not able to provide ASL interpretation for this event

SUMMARY:Gender & Sexuality Learning Series :  Critical Vocabulary on sex\, gender\, and sexuality
DESCRIPTION:Join us for a workshop series over the fall to unpack key languages that we use in our writing\, research\, and dialogues of academia on topics of gender and sexuality.  To register for this series (which you can join in full or by session)\, please fill out this form! \n\nThese events will take place bi-weekly online beginning on Thursday\, September 14 from 1-2:30pm  \n\nIn these workshop\, we’ll have the chance to explore the nuances of terms and deepen our understanding of them. We’ll also discover how language can both reflect and shape our attitudes towards sex\, gender\, and sexuality\, and explore ways to use more inclusive language in our lives. Topics include: critical vocabulary of sexuality and gender\, the question of agency\, rethinking sex\, portrayals of sex and sexuality on-screen\, and capitalism and sexuality. Please find the dates and sign up for the sessions you are interested in below.\n\nAbout your Facilitator:\nWe have these sessions run by our Co-Director of Research and Education\, Hannah\, who holds a Masters’ Degree in Gender\, Sexuality\, and Women’s Studies from SFU. She thrives on community work and on various ways in which she can support and care for the members of SFPIRG. Having been a teacher for over ten years\, Hannah loves to organize events and facilitate workshops for students in order to help them find calm in a chaotic world and resist the systems that actively oppress our bodies. She loves to find new ways to practice self-care and active rest both for herself and for practicing it with the community.\n\n\n\nThank you wanting to join us for this important discussion!

SUMMARY:No Cops on Campus Open House
DESCRIPTION:Join members of the coalition No Cops on Campus to learn more about the work they are doing this fall! Members will be available to talk about organising they have done so far\, plans for the coming term\, and how you can get involved! We will be serving light snacks and beverages\, as well as making buttons! Please fill out this form to register (this is a drop in event\, but we need to know how many snacks to plan for!) \nAbout No Cops on Campus \nNo Cops on Campus (NCoC) is a collective of students and staff from across SFU campuses with a shared goal of growing\, dreaming\, and advocating for something beyond a status quo that relies on policing and security. \nSFU relies on security largely because of a misunderstanding that colonial policing is the only way to keep people “safe” on campus. Yet\, this form of safety does not extend to those who are traditionally targeted by policing systems including BIPOC communities\, Muslim peoples\, disabled peoples\, queer peoples\, and low income or houseless community members. We support and encourage those within educational institutions who are imagining futures with non-violent and inclusive community safety instead. Our work is built on decades of work by students across North America who similarly push for the implementation of these life-affirming alternatives to policing. \nWe as a student and workers collective are working toward the elimination of police and policing presence on all SFU campuses. \nAccessibility Considerations: \n\nour office is located near the elevator in the Students’ Union Building\nour door is wide enough to accommodate most mobility aids\nwe have a wide variety of seating available for many body types\nwe only use lamps in our space so those sensitive to overhead lighting can enjoy their time with us\nalthough we are interested in engaging in challenging conversation around police\, prison\, and abolition we will not tolerate abusive or condescending behaviour in our space. You will be asked to leave the space during the event if you are making our guests feel uncomfortable.\n\n  \n

SUMMARY:Social Justice Policy Clinic: Gender-based Violence and Policy
DESCRIPTION:Thank you for your interest in this policy clinic\, which will not only teach you about different kinds of policy analysis\, but also create recommendations for SFU GP44: Sexual Violence and Misconduct\, Prevention\, Education\, and Support which is being reviewed. If you are interested in this clinic\, please register here. \nThis policy clinic is being facilitated by SFPIRG Director of Engagement\, Chantelle Spicer\, who has seven years of experience in sexualized violence policy in post-secondary institutions. She served as the Co-Chair of Students for Consent Culture Canada from 2019-2022 and has been involved in the organisation for 4 years. She also was a part of the committee that wrote the policy for Vancouver Island University and serves as an advisory council member on a number of provincial and federal government committees related to policy\, legislation\, and gender-based violence.\n\nUnlike other SFPIRG opportunities\, much of this clinic is specifically for SFU students and community members given that it is contributing directly to SFU policy\, though all are welcome to join for session 1 where we will discuss gender-based policy analysis more broadly. \n\nAs a part of this clinic\, you are expected to read the existing policy before our session on Tuesday September 26\, which can be found here.\n\n\nAll attend: Session 1\, Tuesday September 19 1-3pm (online):\n– History of GP44 and SV policy in BC\n– Discussing different kinds of policy analysis for Gender-based Violence (GBV) work including GBA+ (commonly used by the provincial and federal governments)\, Indigenous GBV lens (new framework codeveloped by Indigenous women in BC\, and analysis created by Students for Consent Culture Canada\n\n\n\nPick one of the following: Session 2\, Tuesday September 26 1-:3:00pm (online) OR Thursday September 28 from 10-12pm (in person)\n– General discussion of GP44\, what stood out to us as beneficial? what stood out as a challenge or barrier?\n– Grading GP 44 through the criteria of Students for Consent Culture\n\nAll attend: Session 3\, Tuesday October 3 1-3pm (online)\n– making our recommendations for policy revisions
