SUMMARY:Equity\, Diversity & Inclusion Workshop
DESCRIPTION:Take part in a day of facilitated discussion and practical skills building to gain a better understanding of oppression and ways to stand up for yourself and others when you see it playing out in daily life. This workshop will take a “no blame\, no shame” approach to the issues. People of all levels of familiarity with anti-oppression work are welcome. \nExplore questions like: \n\nWhat is oppression?\nWhat forms of oppression exist?\nIs there such a thing as “reverse oppression”?\nWhat do terms like intersectionality and privilege mean?\nWhere do I fit into all of this?\nHow can I work for change?\n\n  \nAccessibility Info:\n*UPDATE* ASL interpretation is booked and confirmed for this event\, and will be provided by Lisz and Larissa. \nThe event space is wheelchair/scooter accessible with access to an accessible washroom nearby. \nA gender-neutral washroom is available just down the hall from the event space. \nIn order to enable people to attend without experiencing hardship\, Compass tickets and money for dependent care (this can include childcare\, eldercare\, etc.) are available upon request. Please email admin@sfpirg.ca with inquiries. \nWhile we cannot ensure a fully scent-free event in this setting\, we’re aiming to create a scent-reduced environment by not bringing additional scents into the space. Exposure to laundry products\, colognes\, hairspray\, and many other scented products can trigger serious health reactions in individuals with asthma\, allergies\, migraines\, and/or chemical sensitivities. We ask that you not wear/ apply/ or bring any scented products into this space. If you do so\, we may need to ask you to leave so others can safely stay in the space. If you find yourself being impacted by someone’s use of scented products during the conference\, speak with any one of the organizers. We know that this can be a big step for many people. As Leah Lakshmi Piepzna-Samarasinha says in Fragrance Free Femme of Colour Realness\, “Cutting out scents may seem like a pain in the ass\, but it means that awesome\, ass-kicking community members you love can attend events you’re at and make out with you without having seizures\, throwing up or otherwise getting really sick.” Please\, bring your amazing self\, and keep the scents at home!\n(More info here: http://thinkbeforeyoustink.com/howtogofragrancefree.html\,http://www.brownstargirl.org/blog/fragrance-free-femme-of-colour-realness-draft-15\, http://eastbaymeditation.org/accessibility/scentfree.html) \nThe event is nut-free and peanut-free. Absolutely no nuts or peanuts will be permitted within the event space in order to create an allergen-free environment for all participants. This includes (but is not limited to) products like hazelnuts\, cashews\, almonds\, coconuts\, walnuts\, coconut oil\, coconut milk\, and peanut butter. \nIf you have any other allergies or sensitivities that we need to know about so that you can participate fully and safely\, please let us know at admin@sfpirg.ca. \nSome folks are sensitive and/or get sick from electromagnetic frequency radiation (EMF). This can include radiation from cell phones\, Wi-Fi\, fluorescent lights\, and more. SFU Burnaby has Wi-Fi set up throughout its campus\, including in theevent space. In order to reduce EMF exposure\, we will strive to minimize fluorescent light usage and utilize natural lighting whenever possible. \nIf there is any other way we can make this event more accessible for you\, please let us know at admin@sfpirg.ca!

SUMMARY:Power in Our Words: Talking about sexual violence
DESCRIPTION:In a society enmeshed in rape culture\, it is vital that we empower and equip ourselves and each other to support survivors of sexual violence. The words we use to talk about sexual violence are powerful – they can perpetuate harm\, or they can cultivate healing. \nOpen to everyone\, this workshop is especially designed for all students\, staff and faculty who are actively working to support survivors\, to build safer spaces on campus\, and to create a world free of sexual violence. \nThrough this workshop\, we will: \n\nExplore the systemic nature of sexual violence\nScreen the documentary “It Was Rape”\nUse the documentary as a starting point to unpack truths\, myths and stories of sexual violence\nDiscuss the legal framework used here in Canada to address sexual violence\nDeepen our vocabulary and revisit how we talk about sexual violence\n\nActive listeners will be present to support anyone who is triggered during this event. \n  \nAccessibility Info:\nASL is booked for this event. Please register by November 2nd at 9am to request ASL. If no requests for ASL are received by November 2nd at 9am\, ASL interpretation will be cancelled.

SUMMARY:Excessive Demands: A critical look at section 38(1)(c) of Canada’s Immigration and Refugee Protection Act
DESCRIPTION:Part of Disability Awareness Week 2017\, brought to you by the Committee To End Ableism! \n  \nWhile Canada champions itself as an open and welcoming country for immigrants and refugees from around the world\, oppressive and discriminatory clauses in the Immigration and Refugee Protection Act explicitly exclude people with disabilities. \nJoin us for a critical discussion of the “Protection” Act\, including a screening of the short film Safar (Journey) by Mariam Zaidi\, and learn more about the importance of disability justice in the wider context of body sovereignty and diversity. \n  \nAbout the film and filmmaker: \nSafar (journey) is a film about Mariam Zaidi’s sister\, Rabab\, who has cerebral palsy. As part of the UAE’s expatriate population\, Zaidi’s family is one of many that has no access to government healthcare and no option for permanent residency. Contrasting the opulence of Dubai with its absence of social benefits\, Safar examines the lack of security felt by the UAE’s expatriate population. The film focuses on Zaidi’s family’s attempt to migrate from the UAE to Canada\, and its subsequent rejection based on the “excessive burden” clause of the Immigration and Refugee Protection Act. \nWith challenges from Canadian immigration\, Zaidi attempts to embark on an alternate route by applying for citizenship alone\, in the hopes of sponsoring Rabab as her dependent. The film addresses the loss of support the filmmaker’s family has felt in her absence. Questioning rigid Canadian immigration policies that do not consider the nuances of each family situation\, Safar challenges the way we look at people with disabilities in and outside of Canada as a “burden.” \n  \nFor more information about Disability Awareness Week 2017\, including registration and accessibility info for all events\, please visit: https://www.facebook.com/events/146130325964599/ \n  \nAccessibility Info:\nUnfortunately\, we are unable to provide ASL interpretation for this event. ASL interpretation has been booked for another one of our events this semester\, Power In Our Words: Talking About Sexual Violence. Please note the November 2nd deadline for registering and requesting ASL interpretation for that event. \nThe event space is wheelchair/scooter accessible with access to an accessible washroom nearby. \nA gender-neutral washroom is available just outside and around the corner from the event space. \nWhile we cannot ensure a fully scent-free event in this setting\, we’re aiming to create a scent-reduced environment by not bringing additional scents into the space. SUMMARY:Fat Camp 2017
DESCRIPTION:Building Fat Resistance!\nBuilding Fat Capacity!\nBuilding Fat Community! \nREGISTRATION LINK: Coming soon!\n\nJoin Fat Panic! Vancouver\, SFPIRG and PeerNet for a day of dreaming\, scheming and organizing as we explore possible healing and resistance strategies that we can enact\, as individuals and with others. What can we create that will support fat people in our community to not only survive\, but heal and thrive? What actions can we take\, collectively and/or as individuals\, to push back against the forces of anti-fat evil? How can we gather and share resources – energy\, time and money – to support these efforts? \nPlease note that as part of the work of this day\, Fat Panic! will be seeking donations. We ask that folks with sufficient income\, who want to see more fat organizing and community building\, donate what you can; given our social reality\, these things can’t really happen without funds. We also ask that people who are struggling financially\, especially fat working class and poor people\, consider saving your resources to support your own well-being\, though we respect that people from working class and poor backgrounds often are the ones who contribute a disproportionate amount to grassroots community organizing. \nWe hope to obtain funds that will allow us to A) provide some form of honoraria to Fat Camp organizers who are not already being paid for their time\, and B) to build a fund that would be available to support one or more of the project ideas that come out of this day\, with priority going to ensuring that these projects have the necessary funds to ensure maximum accessibility. \nFurther event details to come! \nACCESSIBILITY INFO \nASL is being booked for this event. Please register by July 27th at noon to confirm your attendance. If no confirmations are received by July 27th at noon\, ASL interpretation will be cancelled. \nMore access info to be posted soon!
