Working on a social or environmental justice project or campaign? SFPIRG has funding available to support local grassroots social justice work. Donation requests are strictly monetary.*
Funding is Available: - to students and student groups (at SFU and other schools) - to community groups that have an annual budget of less than $200,000 - for projects that have a commitment to social and environmental justice
Priority is Given to: - groups and projects in the Lower Mainland - groups working within their own communities (showing self-determination)
Funding is Not Allocated to: - student or work exchanges - groups fundraising to donate to other groups or causes (we prefer to donate directly)
Small Donations {up to $500} This fund is available to groups with little organizing experience as well as established groups. Can be used for small campaigns, one time events, art projects, publications and other forms of social justice organizing. Applications reviewed on an ongoing basis.
Large Donations {$500-$1000} Groups applying for large donations must have a bank account in the organization's name. Group must have previous experience organizing events or campaigns. Large donations are given out once a semester, deadline to apply is usually Nov 15, Mar 15, and July 15. ** Deadline for Summer 2010, extended to Aug 2, 2010.
Conferences & Workshops Fund {$100} Funding available for students and community members attending social and environmental justice conferences and/or workshops. Priority given to SFU students. Applications reviewed on an ongoing basis. Download application form.
Usamah Ansari Creative Justice Award {$500} In memory of SFPIRG volunteer Usamah Ansari, this annual award supports creative social justice work including art, poetry, music and writing. Individuals or groups can apply. Priority given to communities of colour, refugees and youth. Application deadline is April 6th, the anniversary of Usamah's birthday.
Accessibility Fund {up to $200} Funding available to increase the accessibility of social or environmental justice projects or events. Individuals or groups can apply for funding to cover expenses for things such as bus tickets, childcare, translators, ASL interpreters, accessible venues, adaptive technologies, etc. Applications reviewed on an ongoing basis.

The donations committee meets once a month to review requests. If funding is allocated, a cheque will be mailed to you in 4 - 6 weeks. Please be aware that this is volunteer-run and students do not meet between school semesters. If you are producing a report/publication/video etc. with this funding we would appreciate a copy for our resource library.
