Membership with SFPIRG and Opting Out

As a student of SFU, you pay a small levy to SFPIRG that is collected as part of your student fees. This is similar to the fees paid to other student organizations at SFU including CJSF, the Peak, the First Nation's Student Association and the WUSC refugee support program. This fee structure exists on almost all campuses across Canada. This fee ($3 for full time and $1.50 for part-time students) is refundable.

What is SFPIRG and where does your fee go?

SFPIRG is a student-funded and directed social and environmental justice resource centre at SFU.All of our services, trainings, resources, library, workshops and research program (ARX) are available to all students.

These include:

  • Trainings (media design, running effective meetings, anti-oppression)
  • Lending Library (5000 books, DVDs, reports on a range of social justice issues)
  • Community Based research program (Action Research eXchange (ARX) allows you to work with a community group for class credit)
  • Bike Tool Coop (a do-it-yourself space to fix your bicycle)
  • Student lounge (free phone, microwave, couches, magazines, shelf of reciprocity)
  • Student-Prisoner Research program (Letters for The Inside)
  • Campus events of a wide range of social and environmental justice issues
  • Recycling, composting and other on campus sustainability initiatives
  • Support, resources and funding for a wide range of on campus social justice work (current campaigns include climate change, protection of old growth forests, a bottled water free campus, animal welfare campaign) as well as support for other on campus humanitarian and sustainability campaigns, events and groups

If you do not support the work of SFPIRG, you can request a refund of your fee ($3 for full time & $1.50 for part-time students). (Note: when you receive a refund of your SFPIRG fee, you are no longer a member and are not able to access related services and resources)
