REACH community health centre |
|
Organization Goal
|
REACH is a community health centre that has been located on the east side of Vancouver since 1969. We became incorporated as a non-profit society in 1970 with a Board of Directors comprised primarily of community members and patients of the clinic.
Since its inception, REACH has endeavoured to meet the medical, dental, and cultural needs of the community with an emphasis on prevention and the development of programs which reflect the ongoing needs of the ever changing composition of the community. REACH strives to reflect the philosophy of community health centres which promotes a team approach in a non-profit setting with all staff, including dentists and physicians, on salary.
REACH has adopted the definition of health as: “The extent to which an individual or group is able on one hand to realize aspirations and satisfy needs; and on the other hand, to change or cope with the environment.” Our community health centre strives to incorporate this definition of health in its culturally sensitive programs and interdisciplinary approach to the delivery of services. REACH has a strong commitment to community development and works to build a collaborative relationship with users of the clinic. There is an equally strong commitment on behalf of the staff to illustrate an openness and acceptance of the ethnic, cultural and social diversity which is found in our community.
How REACH Works
REACH is more than just a doctor or dentist's office. We offer many health and social services with interdisciplinary teams under one roof. As a non-profit society, we are directly accountable to the community we serve and are governed by a Board of Directors. Our mission is to improve the health and well-being of our community, and our focus is on accessibility and excellence in primary health care.
• REACH emphasizes prevention, health promotion, health education, and community development services.
• Our staff, board, and volunteers are resource people to our community. We aim to assist the community in making informed decisions about health and overcome the social barriers to health.
• REACH places a high value on democratic decision making with input from the board, staff, those who use the centre, and our community. |

What is the most accessible and sustainable way for a community-based organization with limited resources to develop and maintain a website? How can we design a website that will facilitate and enhance ongoing activism, popular education, and community-building?
The main objective of this website is to build a communication centre connecting Fat Panic! and people in our communities, including fat activists, allies, and service providers.
|
|
|
Organization Name
|
Fat Panic! |
|
Organization Goal
|
We are committed to the following:
- Educating ourselves and others about the causes and consequences of fat oppression, always keeping in mind that fat oppression shapes and is shaped by all other systemic forms of inequity.
- Creating spaces and events in which fat people and our allies can come together to socialize and engage in political activism – while we acknowledge that safety is an elusive and sometimes troublesome concept, it remains a goal worth striving for.
- Challenging myths around fatness, thinness and health. This involves, at least, working to:
...raise public awareness about the abundant and high quality - yet strangely under-reported - research showing that the relationship between fat and health is not at all as commonly advertised.
...break down the mystique of anti-fat science by equipping people with essential science literacy skills.
...encourage health care professionals to adopt an approach that is capable of supporting people of all sizes as we make our own choices relating to health, while avoiding the notion that there is a moral obligation to strive for any particular conception of health. |

CJSF-FM / Simon Fraser Campus Radio Society |
|
Organization Goal
|
CJSF is a campus-community radio station licensed by the CRTC to broadcast from the Burnaby campus of Simon Fraser University. We are funded by SFU students, but our broadcast area is greater than the university, encompassing most of the Lower Mainland, and also parts of Vancouver Island and the islands between. The radio studios are just over the entrance of the Burnaby campus (one floor down from SF-PIRG), in TC-216. We offer airtime and broadcast training to students and non-students alike.
One condition of our broadcasting licence is that we air voices and issues that are not widely heard in mainstream media. Among those are the voices and issues of women, queer and trans people, working people, people of colour, Indigenous communities, and environmental/social justice organizations. Although these voices and issues appear in our regular broadcasting, special days of programming provide a perfect platform for people new to radio or who want to present their course work to a public audience. |

The Battered Women's Support Services Violence Stops Here Campaign takes the anti violence message forward into the 21st Century recognizing that violence against women isn’t only a woman’s issue but is clearly an issue for men. We urge men to own their role in ending violence against women, become part of the solution and break the silence.
We seek to identify the key components of men's prevention and intervention work to inform development of a comprehensive violence intervention program
|
|
|
Organization Name
|
Battered Women's Support Services |
|
Organization Goal
|
A determined group of women started Battered Women’s Support Services (BWSS) in 1979. Over the years, BWSS has grown into a strong and dynamic organization. We continue to provide support and advocacy for over 8,000 women who have experienced abuse, as well as, training and education about violence against women. In 2008, we re-visioned our mandate of system advocacy and law reform. As part of the feminist anti-violence movement, our long-term goal is the elimination of all violence against women. In 2010, we launched The Violence Stops Here Campaign taking the anti violence message straight into the 21st Century recognizing that violence against women isn’t only a woman’s issue but is clearly an issue for men.
Battered Women’s Support Services consists of 24 staff and approximately 70 volunteers.

What considerations should PSS take into account as it formulates and introduces best practices for child protection advocates?
This project is a component of a larger, 3-year project aimed at increasing sector-wide awareness of and capacity to respond to the advocacy needs of parents involved with child protection services (i.e. parents whose children have been removed by child protection services, or who are at-risk of having children removed).
Key objectives:
1) Research past and current initiatives aimed at introducing best practices to field where they formerly did not exist.
2) Drawing from your research, discuss (in paper, or more suitable format) how PSS should introduce best practices for child protection advocates.
