Project Description (Use this space to further elaborate on the project)
The Rafiki Link is an initiative which links schools in Canada with schools in Kenya. We are part of CTC International (www.ctcinternational.org) which works in Maai Mahiu, Kenya. Our goal is to create a website which allows individual students to engage with their counterparts in Kenya. Check out www.rafikilink.blogspot.com to see what we’ve already created. We have used blogs to have classes communicating with each other. However we want to make the website more fun, more graphic-based, and secure enough to allow student-to-student communication (perhaps a ‘chat’ or ‘discussion’ room?). if you have ideas on how to make our website more youth-friendly and more interactive, please help us out.
How do you plan to use the results of this project?
The website structure created will be developed and then used immediately by students at Bodwell High School in Canada with students at 3 public secondary schools in Kenya.
What larger goal is served by undertaking this project?
By connecting students in Canada with students in Kenya we are promoting global education and awareness for students in Canada. Students can come to realize, as they learn along-side and with their counterparts, that those in Kenya are not as different as they might expect. With that realization of common humanity, and the realization that each student could just as easily have been born in a different place, comes a greater desire to support and assist those who happen to have less opportunity than us.
