The Role of Theatre for Young Audience performances in Education
What is the central research question you want answered?
What are the objectives of your project?
What value(s) should a theatrical performance bring to the educational experience in both elementary and secondary schools? Are performances an effective teaching tool?
To fully understand the expectations of educators and parents in adding performance arts programming within the school system and to measure the effectiveness of meeting those goals against current programming choices.

TBA - 2 phases expected to be 1. report of 25-30 pages including a literature review and background research, with design of a survey and 2. distribution and compilation of 100 plus surveys with a summary report

Survey current trends in the purpose of theatrical presentations in schools (elementary & secondary), i.e. what are schools currently selecting for performances in the school/class.
Undertake to determine why productions are booked; what determines the selection; the importance of curriculum, social/behavioral factors.
How do you plan to use the results of this project?
Shared within the professional theatre for young audiences community in Canada we anticipate the survey and research will be used to help to inform programming choices. Organizationally we will use it to better inform both our play development projects and to improve marketing and information flow to educators.
What larger goal is served by undertaking this project?
It will help the Theatre for Young Audience community better understand the objectives of educators in the use of performing arts within the educational system and

Green Thumb Theatre creates and produces plays that explore social issues relevant to the lives of children, youth and young adults. We provide theatre that celebrates the language and stories of today’s generation and culture to stimulate empathy, debate and critical thinking.
Green Thumb Theatre explores contemporary issues with an emphasis on entertainment, enlightenment and education; issues such as:

What are the specific deliverables that you expect of the student?
Each phase is the duration of one semester:
1. Survey current trends, summarise, design a survey based on research
2. Conduct a survey and Interviews, compile data and use it to draw conclusions as to the effectiveness of performances as a teaching tool.
Each company member will assist as required or possible in the collection of data. The data should be collected without reference to the host organization undertaking the study.
