Project Description (Use this space to further elaborate on the project)
The Philippines has experienced over 1000 extra-judicial killings of trade union and social activists since 2001. Philippine NGOs charge that most of the killings and disappearances are the result of their government perusing an aggressive anti-labour policy to attract foreign investment to the country.
Our organization (BCCHRP) needs to pinpoint Canadian economic and governmental connections with the Philippines in order to put pressure on different levels of Canadian government and business to in turn pressure the Philippine administration to stop the repression.
Examples of this would be to identify CIDA funding in the Philippines, Canadian Military training of Filipinos, Canadian arms sales to the Philippines, and Canadian companies which benefit from a week labour force in the Philippines (egs. call centres and mining)
We are looking for data between 2001-today as it is most relevant.
How do you plan to use the results of this project?
We need to identify indirect (and direct) Canadian assistance and investment to the Philippines, in order to lobby government and business to help to end human rights violations in the Philippines. The data will be used to bring our research up to date. In addition we will the research in order to educate Canadian citizens on the dire situation of human rights in the Philippines.
What larger goal is served by undertaking this project?
To reduce the murder and disappearances of social, environmental and trade union activists both in the Philippines and in the world by bringing attention to the forces driving governments to repress their citizens or turning a blind eye from human rights violations.
